Speech and Language Therapy:
Speech and language therapy services address a wide range of difficulties related to the oral mechanism, hearing mechanism and overall communication development.Helping Hands School employs several speech and language therapists. Our staff has an average of 24 years experience providing quality speech and language assessment and intervention services. All speech and language therapists at Helping Hands hold a Masters degree in the field. Speech and language staff holds appropriate credentials to practice in the setting, such as certification or licensure.
The speech and language staff at Helping Hands:Completes screenings at community settings, such as daycare centers and nursery schoolsWorks cooperatively with other community agencies, such as the Early Childhood Direction Center, to identify children whose development is not consistent with age level expectationsCompletes evaluations that are approved by the school district Committees on Preschool Special EducationPart of a multidisciplinary evaluation team, which also includes a school psychologist and social worker, and occupational or physical therapistsProvides children with services mandated by the Individual Education Plan (IEP) put in place by the child's school district
Speech and language therapy services are provided to children enrolled in classroom programs at Helping Hands School and Academy Nursery School. Services are provided individually or in small groups and take place either in a therapy room or classroom, as indicated on an IEP. Various intervention techniques are utilized, as dictated by each child’s individual areas of strength and the communication needs that he/she presents with.
Our staff possesses training in a variety of current and evidence-based intervention methods. We use supportive communication strategies such as manual communication, PECS or communication devices as needed by a child. New and effective methods are employed as therapists continue to acquire skills through continuing education activities.
