- The short story begins in the school hall where Lynne Webbings eagerly awaits the result of the short story competition.

- She has worked very hard on her story about a sheepdog in a flood.

- The Headmaster, Mr Velos, says that they have difficulties in choosing the winner as there are two wonderful stories- one is written by Lynne and the other by her classmate, Geoff Bolder.

- In the end, they thought that Geoff's story about a circus elephant running loose in a park is funnier and more difficult to write.

- So,Geoff wins the Holmes-Watkins Medal while Lynne is in second place.

-Although disappointed,Lynne accepts the decision and congratulates Geoff.
