For an example :

1. Zinc metal reacts with Copper Sulphate solution
Zn + CuSO₄ ---> ZnSO₄ + Cu

★You can see they exchange their anion and cation partner.
AB + CD ---> AD + CB
That's how it is ;)

In the equation above, Zn gets Cu's girlfriend. Cu has no girlfriend to replace. So Cu is single now.
A + CD ---> AD + C

★Just remember they will exchange their anion and cation partners. But for some reactions, you need to know what the products will be. Like the question you mentioned, you need to know metal reacts with water will form metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Here is an example :

K + H₂O ---> KOH + H₂
Balance the equation :
2K + 2H₂O ---> 2KOH + H₂

★Another example of reaction is when metal reacts with acid that you must know it will form salt and hydrogen gas.

Na + HCl ---> NaCl₂ + H₂
Balance the equation :
Na + 2HCl ---> NaCl₂ + H₂
