Electrolysis take place when electricity pass through a solution and causes it to decompose. the compounds which conduct electricity when dissolved in water or molten are called electrolytes (ex. acids, alkalis and salts). electrolytes are normallly ionic compounds and can conduct electricity. compounds that do not conduct electricity are called non-electrolytes (ex. sugar, glucose, alcohol...)
